The Disturbing Religious Horror and Giant Spider Monsters of HBO's 30 Coins Trailer

We've seen the freaky visuals from the 30 Coins teaser, now we've got a fuller look at the upcoming HBO thriller series, as well as an official release date.

The title refers to the 30 coins that Judas receieved from the Romans to betray Jesus Christ. Now someone is trying to gather those very ancient coins, which, when collected, will become "a weapon more powerful than the very Arc of the Covenant" — and we all saw how face-meltingly powerful that was in Raiders of the Lost Ark. In this new trailer, it's implied that the coins grant some kind of immortality, or at least an imperviousness to bullets.

It may be up to Father Vergara (Eduardo Fernandez), an exiled exorcist living in a remote Spanish village and "captain of the armies of the Lord," to stop this religious horror from taking hold.

30 Coins premieres January 4 on HBO.
