What's a costume drama without the costumes?
Shondland's debut Netflix series Bridgerton is awash in lush costuming from designer Ellen Mirojnick, who explains in a new featurette (above) that "this interpretation of 1813 needed to be an overview of 'how can we add modern elements to it'? We've made it more luxurious and more sumptuous, and we've introduced a modern color palate but really tried to stick to the basic foundation of the 1813 silhouette."
Bessie Carter, who plays Prudence Featherington, talks about her surprise at Mirojnick's designs. "I walked in thinking beige bonnets and carriages, and then Ellen showed me the book that had the ideas of the costumes, the colors, the shapes, and she went 'real,' and it was like a painting from the time, 'high fashion,' and it was like a high fashion thing, and then she was like 'Shonda.'"
Phoebe Dynevor, who plays Daphne Bridgerton, reveals that she alone has 104 different dresses, which truly illustrates the massive scale of the entire project.
Season 1 of Bridgerton is now streaming on Netflix.
