Sunny Hostin put on her prosecutor hat Wednesday morning when she schooled guest co-host Lindsey Granger about Critical Race Theory. After Granger insisted that children need to learn about "Black excellence" rather than the "victimization of Black people," Hostin accused her of "parroting" Republicans' misleading talking points about CRT. "People like you have bought into it," said the longtime co-host, her disdain only thinly veiled. "And that's a shame."
Granger spent a bit of Tuesday's show railing against the perceived dangers of Critical Race Theory, so it was no surprise when she got heated during a similar discussion this morning. "My whole conversation yesterday was about teaching about Black excellence. I want to see that be the first issue on your agenda, your agenda," said the Daily Blast Live host. "Because I want to see Black people thrive. We are not victims! Even though we have been victimized, we are not victims. We are here to grow and there's beauty in us, and we are winning out here. Black people are beautiful, so I want to see that more often. And I don't want to constantly tell my six-year-old daughter that she's a victim!"
After a commercial break, Hostin spoke directly to Granger's request. "What you have to understand, Lindsey, is that the Republican agenda is to not only stop teaching about slavery, but also to not teach about Black excellence," she said. "That is what is happening. Books are being banned. Learning systems are being restricted all over this country. And so when you say things like, 'Black people are being victimized,' you're parroting their talking points. You've got to be really careful about that."
As Granger explained the kinds of books she's specifically referring to — "Let's talk about the book that teaches children about all the beauty that came before you" — Hostin reminded her that Republicans are "banning those books too." Added the co-host, "They want to ban Bakari Sellers' book. They want to ban his book about Black excellence and children. That's one book! I've got a list of them!"
When Sara Haines attempted to defend Granger's argument, saying that "Critical Race Theory has become an umbrella term for some other things that are happening," Hostin really went off. "It's only becoming an umbrella term because Republicans are making it that way!" she said. "And people like Lindsey are buying into it!"
"Critical Race Theory is a Harvard Law class. It's a Harvard disciple that was started by Derrick Bell," she continued. "There was a troll — Christopher Rufo — who decided he was going to call African American history and the history of this country 'Critical Race Theory.' And people like you have bought into it."
As The View's theme music began to play, Granger got in one final remark. "We have to acknowledge that parents are asking to be involved in this conversation, and that's not a bad thing," she said. "So we should allow them to have space to talk at the table with their children."
Never one to be outdone, Hostin had an answer for her. "Shouldn't parents want to normalize discussions about race and racism?" asked Hostin. "Sure, but it should be their choice to decide," replied Granger.
Wednesday was Granger's last day at the table, so fans (and Sunny) can breathe a sigh of relief that they won't need to keep her in check any longer.
