Star Trek Discovery Boldly Goes Into Summer Hiatus

SEASON FINALE: The second-season finale for Star Trek: Discovery promises to be action-packed and dramatic as hell. The flagship series for CBS’s All-Access streamingplatform has been a critical success, if not quite the blockbuster series that they may have been hoping for. But, recent JJ Abrams movies aside, Star Trek has always been for the hardcore fans more than the masses. And with a season finale that combines the starships Discovery AND the Enterprise, there’s every chance that the finale will have those fans talking. Streaming on CBS All-Access

SEASON PREMIERE: In this era of streaming platforms and binge-watching, the idea of a cushy time slot isn’t what it used to be. But there was a time when time slots were everything. Shows could become hits just by virtue of airing in that sweet spot between Friends and Seinfeld. It’s what comes to mind when you see that the Life in Pieces season premiere is airing in a special time slot, in between The Big Bang Theory and Mom. CBS certainly seems to want to make this family sitcom in its fourth season a hit. And who can blame them, with a cast that includes Dianne Wiest, James Brolin, Colin Hanks, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Tom Sadoski. 8:30 PM ET on CBS

NEW EPISODE: Fresh off of his announcement that he’s running for President, South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg will appear on Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about his hopes for America’s future and the prospect of being the first out gay major-party nominee. 12:37 AM ET on NBC

NEW EPISODE: The most anticipated episode of any season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is “Snatch Game,” where the remaining queens put on their best celebrity impersonation and take part in a thin gloss on a ‘70s game show. The game show is never the story; the story is in how successfully (or, in many ways, not) the queens can deliver their impersonations. Some of the best remembered ones include Jinkx Monsoon’s Little Edie (from Grey Gardens), Ben DeLaCreme as Maggie Smith, and Chad Michaels as Cher. This year? The theme is “Match Game at Sea, with Veep stars Tony Hale and Clea DuVal as guest judges. 9:00 PM ET on VH1

SERIES PREMIERE: Perhaps the success of Terrace House on Netflix is what spurred their pickup of the narrative series My First First Love, since its premise — a group of Korean friends move into the same house, where they live, laugh, and love — feels designed to re-create the Terrace House vibe in fiction form. Hey, they could do worse for inspiration. Streaming on Netflix
