Combine The Crown with our age-old fascination in the Romanov dynasty and you've got Netflix's new series,The Last Czars. Focusing on the final years of the once mighty Russian royal family, the series promises an up close and personal look at the events leading up to one of the most shocking events in 20th century history.
SERIES PREMIERE: Unfurling over six episodes, The Last Czars takes a unique approach, intercuting documentary interviews with historical experts with dramatic scenes performed by the likes of Coronation Street's Ben Cartwright and Susanna Herbert. Streaming on Netflix
SPECIAL PRESENTATION: Amazon Studios doesn't churn out nearly as many films as Netflix, but their theatrical releases are usually quality productions. Peterloo, the studio's first collaboration with the prolific Mike Leigh, is about the infamous "Peterlook Massacre" in 1819 Britain, when government forces descended upon protesters. NEW EPISODE: The eighth season of MTV's reality dating competition Are You the One? is also its most compelling, thanks in large part to the decision to cast the entire show with sexually fluid people. Not only has this opened the door for a huge uptick in bisexual, pansexual, and transgender representation, but it's cracked the show's format wide open, as now they're all romantic possibilities for each other. This season is hugely compelling, enlightening viewers without pausing for "teachable moments." Well worth watching. 9:00 PM ET on MTV
SEASON FINALE: Viceland's The Wrestlers wraps up its first season with back-to-back installments. In the first episode, the show travels to the Congo, where pro wrestling and black magic have combined to create something called "voodoo wrestling." In the second episode, a subgenre of Mexican "Lucha Libre" wrestling features male wrestlers who dress in drag and perform femininity. 10:00 PM ET on Viceland
