With the 2020 NFL season leaving a uniquely large group of 14 teams still in contention for the Vince Lombardi Trophy, each of the league's TV partners are getting a seat at the table with a record six wild card games set to be played this weekend. By Sunday night, we'll know which eight teams will advance to next weekend's divisional playoffs.
Also this weekend: HBO bows its two-part Tiger Woods doc, American Gods returns for Season 3 and The Critics Choice Super Awards honor that long-overlooked movie genre — the superhero film. Here's what's new and noteworthy on TV this weekend:
SATURDAY JANUARY 9
NFL FOOTBALL: The league's Super Wild Card Weekend kicks off today with three games:
CABLE PREMIERE: HBO's big Saturday night movie premiere this week is Judd Apatow's King of Staten Island. The underachieving coming of age story follows Scott (Pete Davidson), who's been in a state of arrested development since his firefighter father's death on 9/11, but realizes he must make some changes when his mother begins dating a man who also happens to be a firefighter. Watch trailer. 8:00 PM ET on HBO
MADE FOR TV MOVIE: Aimee Teegarden (Friday Night Lights) plays a hard-charging morning show producer who makes A New Year's Resolution to say 'yes' more, which comes in handy when she produces a story on the handsome Tom Malone (Michael Rady). Watch trailer. 9:00 PM ET on Hallmark
SPECIAL PRESENTATION: Live concerts may still be a thing of the past, but that won't keep Austin City Limits from celebrating the 25th anniversary of one of rock's greatest second acts, as Dave Grohl's Foo Fighters Rock Austin City Limits highlights the band's 2008 and 2014 performances on the long-running concert series. Watch preview. 9:00 PM ET on PBS
MADE FOR TV MOVIE: The holidays are over, so it's out with the schmaltz and in with the psychos as Lifetime presents Obsessed with the Babysitter, in which a young woman finds herself the subject of psychological manipulation and a dangerous infatuation. 8:00 PM ET on Lifetime
ENCORE PRESENTATION: It made headlines for Dave Chapelle's marathon 16-1/2 minute monologue, but our favorite part of Saturday Night Live's post-presidential election episode was Dave Chappelle breaking character to make fun of Pete Davidson's face. Also: musical guests Foo Fighters perform "Shame Shame" and "Times Like These." 11:30 PM ET on NBC
