SMILF's Frankie Shaw was investigated over misconduct allegations

  • Frankie Shaw

Ahead of SMILF's Jan. 20 return for Season 2 on Showtime, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Shaw and her show were investigated earlier this year for misconduct, abusive behavior and violation of industry rules. According to Kim Masters, the show reached "a point where one performer is exiting amid claims her contract was breached due to two mishandled sex scenes, numerous employees have contacted Disney’s anonymous tip line about an array of issues, and complaints have reached the major talent guilds, including allegations of separating writers by race." Actress Samara Weaving says her contract was breached during filming of a Season 2 sex scene. She also alleges that Shaw pressured her to perform nude in Season 1, even though she has a no-nudity clause. Weaving, who made her initial complaint to co-star Rosie O'Donnell, won't return for Season 3 at her request. The Hollywood Reporter also reports that "multiple staffers have made complaints to the WGA about both credit issues and alleged race-based separation, though no formal grievances have been filed." ABC Studios, which produces the show, said it was "committed to a safe work environment, and when we are made aware of issues we address them appropriately." Showtime declined comment, with The Hollywood Reporter saying "its executives were closely involved in the show’s production and were aware of at least some of the allegations." In a statement released through her attorney, Shaw said: “I work daily to create an environment in which everyone should feel safe, and in which I can continue to grow as a leader and manager. I am now and always have been open to hearing and addressing all concerns and issues that fall within my control. It pains me to learn that anyone felt uncomfortable on my set. I sincerely hope we can work together to resolve any and all issues, as I am committed to creating a workplace in which all people feel safe and heard.”
